As I traveled across the west coast, I am very fascinated by the varieties of cactus in California.I have never seen these big ones with red "fruits", therefore, I can't help but took some photos and googled it later at home. It's prickly pear cactus. Prickly pear soaks up selenium from the soil and volatilizes it- that is, causes it to evaporate, thus reducing the liklihood that the mineral will wind up in water.
